SARDAR SAROVAR DAM

On his 67th birthday, 17 September 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's first ever biggest dam and World's second biggest dam, Sardar Sarovar Dam. It is described as "Gujarat's Lifeline" by Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) Leaders. Three Indian states namely Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra will be benefited by its irrigation and electric power supply.
India's first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru laid the foundation stone of this dam on 5April, 1961 and it took 56 years to complete.
It's a gravity dam on the Narmada River near Navagam, Gujarat in India.

Length: 1210 meter (535 ft)
Usable storage: 4.73 million acre of water
The dam has earned over 16000 crore Rs. more than double the cost of its construction and each gate of the dam weighs over 450 tonnes and it takes one hour to close them.

Electricity Allocation:
Maharashtra: 57%
Madhya Pradesh: 27%
Gujarat: 16%

Delay reason: Medha Patkar led Narmada Bachao Andolan took government to the Supreme Court over environmental and rehabilitation (पुनर्वास) issues and obtained a stay in 1996
The court allow resumption (पुनःआरम्भ) of work in October 2000
